Dear Stress Free Mums,
I remember a time when I always corrected my children. My eyes would move to and fro, ensuring they were doing the right thing at home and outside. Imagine the pressure I put on myself and the precious children.
Well, thankfully, I've learnt that there is no such thing as a perfect mum. Motherhood didn't have to be that stressful. I had to change my ways.
I had spent weeks correcting my son's table manners. Sadly, meal time became a session at a correction boot camp - thanks to Mum dearest.
He got tired of listening to me.
I got tired of listening to me.
And I'm sure the rest of the family felt I sounded like a broken record (well they didn't dare tell me😁). And so I changed my tactics. This time I was consciously spotting to praise and my moment came - 'Well done dear, you remembered to chew with your mouth closed. Thanks for trying hard' .
Dearest Son was visibly shocked, he then smiled and continued to try hard. Phew, what a relief.
My eyes still move to and fro, however this time I'm looking out for the good in my children. I call it 'Spotting to Praise' otherwise known as Positive reinforcement. Children should receive more of praise than correction. Giving meaningful praise helps to boost their self esteem and confidence. It also helps mums to see the good in any situation.
Give it a go.
